Ebike Companion App: Native iOS BLE Vehicle Control with Mapbox, BMS, and Anti-Theft
AppMatic Tech built the native iOS companion app for an electric bike startup across an eight-month engagement, implementing BLE read and write command integration for real-time vehicle control, a Mapbox integration outperforming Google Maps on cost and rendering speed, Battery Management System monitoring, anti-theft and remote locking, and riding profile selection. The app launched publicly at multiple Ebike industry expos.

The Challenge of Building a Native iOS App for an Electric Vehicle
Building a native iOS companion app for an electric bike required more than standard mobile development. The app had to maintain a reliable Bluetooth Low Energy connection to the bike's hardware while simultaneously rendering live map data, processing Battery Management System telemetry, and responding to user inputs for locking, profile switching, and anti-theft activation, all without memory pressure or UI degradation that would compromise the riding experience. Google Maps SDK was the default choice for navigation, but introduced unnecessary cost at scale for a startup. AppMatic Tech identified and integrated Mapbox, which delivered better rendering performance at a lower cost, and implemented memory management and caching strategies across the app to ensure stability under simultaneous BLE, map, and telemetry load throughout the eight-month engagement.
Electric Bike Companion Apps, Competitive Analysis
AppMatic Tech mapped the competitive landscape of Ebike companion apps during discovery to identify the gap between proprietary OEM apps and the open, feature-rich platform the startup needed to build.

What AppMatic Tech Engineered for the Ebike App
AppMatic Tech delivered a full-featured native iOS Ebike companion app across eight months, covering BLE vehicle integration, maps, BMS, security, and performance.
- Native iOS App (Swift)
- AppMatic Tech built the Ebike iOS companion app in Swift with BLE device discovery and pairing for the electric bike's onboard hardware, BLE command writing for vehicle control inputs, real-time characteristic read and notify handling for live BMS telemetry and vehicle state, Mapbox integration for live route information, Battery Management System monitoring with charge level and health display, anti-theft activation and monitoring, remote bike locking, riding profile selection, and user authentication and profile management.
- BLE Integration Layer (Read/Write Commands)
- AppMatic Tech implemented the complete Bluetooth Low Energy command interface between the iOS app and the Ebike hardware, writing control commands for locking, profile switching, and anti-theft toggling to the vehicle, and reading live BMS telemetry and vehicle state notifications back into the app in real time. The BLE layer was tested for connection reliability across operating conditions and iOS device variants.
- Mapbox Integration
- AppMatic Tech evaluated available Maps SDKs and integrated Mapbox, which outperformed Google Maps in rendering speed and delivered significant cost reduction at scale, a material advantage for a startup managing operational budget. Map tile caching was implemented to reduce data usage during active riding sessions.
- Memory Optimisation and Caching
- AppMatic Tech audited and optimised memory usage across the full iOS app, ensuring simultaneous BLE connection management, live map rendering, and BMS telemetry processing did not produce memory pressure or UI degradation during active rides. Map tile and API response caching were implemented to reduce redundant network calls and maintain consistent app performance.

Ebike App Interface Design
AppMatic Tech delivered the complete UI design for the Ebike iOS companion app. The interface was structured around the three primary rider contexts: in-motion (live map and route), stationary (BMS monitoring and profile selection), and security (anti-theft and remote locking). Each context was given distinct visual treatment to minimise cognitive load during active riding, with the live map and BMS status accessible within one tap from the home screen.

"AppMatic Tech handled the full complexity of the BLE vehicle integration and the map performance problem at the same time. The Mapbox choice alone saved us significant cost."

Security Architecture on the Ebike App
- BLE Command Authentication
AppMatic Tech implemented command-level validation on all BLE write operations to the Ebike hardware, ensuring only authenticated app sessions could send control commands including remote locking, anti-theft activation, and profile changes. Unauthorised BLE connections could not issue vehicle control instructions.
- Anti-Theft Architecture
The anti-theft feature was architected with server-side state validation, ensuring the bike's theft status could not be toggled through a spoofed BLE signal alone. State changes required authenticated app session confirmation before the BLE command was dispatched to the vehicle.
- Token-Based Session Management
User authentication used token-based sessions with server-side expiry, ensuring vehicle control capabilities including remote locking and anti-theft were scoped to the verified rider account and could not persist after session logout.
- Map and API Credential Protection
Mapbox API keys and third-party vehicle API credentials were stored in the app build configuration with appropriate obfuscation, not hardcoded in source, reducing credential exposure risk in the distributed iOS binary.
- BLE Vehicle Data Integrity
AppMatic Tech implemented integrity checks on all BLE read responses from the Ebike hardware, validating BMS telemetry and vehicle state data before rendering or storing it, preventing corrupted sensor readings from being displayed as accurate vehicle data.
